This is my friend Liz Hickey from Ireland and her son earlier this week. I met Liz a few years ago on FaceBook and we became fast friends. She is quite a remarkable woman and has touched so many lives with her big heart and huge spirit. There is so much of her story I want to share, but today it is about this photograph. Liz graduated college at the same time as her son did.

What you may not know is that Ireland got hit by a huge recession. Jobs, homes and dreams were lost and there was a lot of struggle. In the midst of this chaos, Liz choose to redesign her life. “I went to college to hide during the recession here in Ireland, have founded my social enterprise and have returned for one more year for a higher degree.”

Liz studied hard and sacrificed a lot to earn her degree  in Business and Entrepreneurship. “From this course I conceived Step Up Ireland.” Step Up Ireland is about “inspiring people to discover their potential and create their future, despite economic forecasts and other life challenges…with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.”

She told me it would be called “Achieving Impossible Dreams.” That book would be full of amazing stories of her sacrifices, love, not taking no for an answer and finding other ways to make things happen. “Some day perhaps I will write our story, but for now, we are turning our lives around like a very large ship, slowly but surely.”

She is an inspiration as a woman who in the midst of a dark time for her country, family and self, decided to redesign her life no matter what.

Her favorite song is “The Impossible Dream
