I have a triple PHD in meaning making. I am a meaning making machine. Can you relate?
I can take a look, sound or situation and create my very own narrative inside my head and get all wound up on my own nonsense that is so far from the actual truth.
Why would I share that with you?
Because if you look inside, you will find that you too are a meaning making machine at some level.
As humans we interpret our surroundings and interactions. That is normal, it is how we survive. BUT… then we take it further and make up stuff because that is what our mind does. Think about it, everything is made up, even language.
So we make up our stuff, then we feel it and believe it to be true and we react based on that and not on what really is happening.
We can get our feelings hurt, feel self righteous or insecure. Then what a lot of folks do is they take all of that and tie it up with a bow and share it with someone. Now that person has no idea that you took and made meaning where you did not have to and they believe you. Now both of you are partner in this madness.
This is how gossip starts. This is how untruths begin and this is how we lose heart connection with others and actually create distance that does effect us.
Pay attention to where you make meaning.
Stop and ask yourself if it is really true. Ask the person what they mean if you are making stuff up so you can get clarification. Stop believing gossip and sharing it or getting angry and upset with the person that was talked about.
I know I have been a victim of meaning making machines and it really hurts. It is hard to convince them that they are wrong and it is not actually true. I have also been the meaning making machine.
So stop, check, find out and then move forward. Notice when you go into meaning making mode. What are you feeling, what is the trigger and how does it serve you? As you begin to notice, you can begin to create change.
My triple PHD in meaning making is getting dusty and I like it that way!!
