A Most Common Insecurity: Not Feeling Good Enough

It’s probably safe to say that at some point we all struggle with a common insecurity which is not feeling good enough. For some, this insecurity is more of a struggle and has more significant impacts than for others. But regardless of how a person may be impacted by this specific insecurity, anyone who deals with it can likely concur that it is not pleasant.

Not feeling good enough can stem from a variety of things such as our own perfectionism, negative experiences with people in our lives, or societal/media influences among others. While not feeling good enough may be common, it does not have to be a regular part of your life. There are steps you can take to combat feelings of not being good enough so that you can live a more fulfilling life.

Identify Triggers: It’s important to get to the root of why you don’t feel good enough. This is the best way to address this insecurity properly. When you know what led to your feelings or why you feel the way you do, you can work to improve them.

This requires reflection and self-awareness. At times, you might also need to consult outside assistance to help you go through this process, as you may not be consciously aware of why you feel the way you do.

Positive Self-Talk: When you don’t feel good enough you are often plagued with thoughts about yourself that constantly reinforce why and how you fail to be good enough. Without some intentional efforts these thoughts will continue to play in your head and continue to make you feel poorly about yourself.

Being intentional about reshaping your internal dialogue is essential to helping you feel better about yourself. When you are intentional about using resources like affirmations to speak positively to yourself about yourself, you can alter the way you feel about yourself for the better.

Focus on the Good: Despite how you may feel, you have strengths and achievements. Spending time reflecting on these things can help to affirm a more positive opinion of yourself. When you can see the ways in which you have succeeded it affirms your sense of self and encourages you that you are capable of doing more. This can help you to feel better about yourself.

Find Positive People: It is always helpful to have people in your life who can speak positively to you about you. Sometimes it is hard to see the good about us, but when we have people in our lives who truly care about us and know that we struggle in this area they will work to help keep us uplifted and encouraged. This can help us to combat our own insecurities, see the good in ourselves, and embrace a more positive perspective.

The insecurity of not feeling good enough does not have to control our lives. We can fight against us by taking intentional measures designed to help us see ourselves in a more positive light.

This is a process that can take time, so patience is going to be required. However, pursuing this process is key to not letting insecurity get the best of us. A failure to identify our triggers, reshape our thinking, and find things that affirm us will keep us bound to our insecurity and prevent us from living a fulfilled life. So, addressing our insecurity is the best way to help ourselves prosper.
